Gentle hike from the Zoo, not the best signposting as previously stated, but an easy path to follow, cave is littered and graffittied, but offers a fine view of Belfast. Summit is easy to reach.
Amazing place, easy & cheap to reach by bus from Belfast (but also getting there by taxi is not too expensive).There is a nice easy path leading from the park gates to a lovely castle that provides a great view of Belfast and its gulf. You can visit the castle garden and look for the 9 statues of cats, and then relax and eat something at the castle restaurant, which really is great value for money (you can easily eat a good menu for 10).If you're feeling adventurous, you can climb the steep path right to the top of the hill, but make sure to bring appropriate shoes because the path is very narrow and a bit slippery if it's raining. You can see great caves on the path and enjoy a great view from the top.You can use the castle toilets for free.
great park for hiking - not difficult at all, superb views on the way up as well as at the top, but might get lost if there aren't people around, as we encountered a lot of unmarked paths that seemed to branch off. there's a cellular network tower on one of the adjacent hills, so you aren't offline at any point. there are 4 main routes that we saw:1. via Belfast zoo (pretty narrow and quite overgrown) - we ascended via this one.2. via Belfast castle - this is the widest path, with gravel all the way. seems like the easiest and most popular route - we descended part way down this path. 3. via old cavehill road - this one joins the Belfast castle route about halfway (a small gate marks the point where it joins the castle route) has a spar supermarket near the start, which is good if you need to stock up on snacks/water. stone steps and well packed dirt (until it joins the gravel path of the castle route) - we descended by this path once it branched off the castle route. 4. we saw a path that seems to ascend directly to the fort at the top, but have no idea where it starts from. we did see people climbing it, but the final stretch by this path would have been much steeper than the rest.
Love this walk... Good workout with lots of dogs to pet and great views along the way and a real feeling of accomplishment at marts Fort! I love the strong sense of ancient and recent history of the hill and my kids are now tired of my geological conversations :can we have at least one walk without a geography lesson? It's well sign posted along the routes and I really like the information board at the top. Just a pity when people leave their rubbish... (I took some back down with me.)
Really beautiful place. I can really recommend the path to the Hill which shows the Google Maps - starting from Belleveue, near to the Belfast Zoo. The path is hidden between the bushes and high plant, but it is really nice and take only 40 minutes to get to the pick of the Cave Hill.
